Laddu Holi is famous at Barsana which is celebrated in Sri Ji Temple. This temple is dedicated to Radha Ji and it is a very beautiful and big temple.

Many devotees gather in large numbers and play laddu Holi that throw sweet balls of colour on each other, sing songs and dance around. It is a very interesting and fun full experience. Also there is a shower of flowers on the idols of Radha Ji and lord Krishna. It's not about Holi, it's only about fun and enjoyment. This festival celebrated in this style also gives us a serious message: the colours used during the celebration are always natural and made from flowers to avoid any harmful effect. If you have never attended Holi of Barsana this is a high time you should definitely go there and enjoy this festival. It's a lifetime experience.

Day 2

02 March 2023 Barsana Lath Mar Holi

It is the most famous style of holi which you have seen in every movie which is based on Barsana the Start almost one week before the main holi day. It is a traditional festival where men and women both are involved and they are dressed in a very traditional attire, women addressed as Gopi and the beat men who come dressed as gops with sticks.

The story behind this is that lord Krishna visited Barsana with his friends and used to tease Gopi is there. In reaction, the gopis got annoyed and together wanted to teach them a lesson. So they changed them and started beating them with sticks. This is the story e which is shown in the holy of Barsana.

The men visit Radha Rani temple and gather in groups in the streets, the women with sticks with them on their Shields and elders of the village sit inside the temple and sing songs dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is a treat for the eyes to watch this festival in Barsana.

Location of Barsana and Mathura is very close. Barsana is almost 50 km away from Mathura and it is just a 1 hour drive. To avoid the crowd you must reach the temple as early as possible.

Day 3

03 March 2023 Lathmar holi in Nandgaon

In this type of Holi which is celebrated in nandgaon men from Barsana go to nandgaon and the teams of women there and the men give them beatings. Enjoy this festival you must be there in the early morning.

Day 4

04 March 2023 phool walon ki Holi banke Bihari temple Vrindavan

You always played Holi with colours but have you ever played Holi with flowers? In the banke Bihari temple of Vrindavan will get a chance to see Holi played with colourful flowers on the day of Ekadashi. Here Holi is played with petals of colourful flowers.

Temple gates open at 4 p.m. and the priest Throws colour petals to the devotees and the event lasts for only 30 minutes so it is very important to be there on time to watch this beautiful occasion.

Day 5

05 March 2023 widows Holi

You will get to see a very different type of Holi played in Vrindavan and it is a very emotional and joyful festival. The ladies who were banished from home and became widows were not allowed to play Holi years back but this festival in Barsana has taken a new face and you get to see these ladies playing Holi in Vrindavan.

To see this festival of colours in a very different way you must visit Gopinath temple in Vrindavan around the known and you can also take part in this festival.

Day 6

06 March 2023

Holi in banke Bihari temple Vrindavan

Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan is famous for its Holi celebration. The main event of Holi is celebrated in Vrindavan. You can feel the energy around you and the atmosphere. The temples open at 9 a.m. and people start playing Holi there till 2 p.m. when they get drenched in colours you will see people throwing colour on each other.

You also get snacks kept around the temple and you can have them if you are hungry.

Holi procession in Mathura

After Holi is celebrated in banke Bihari temple, people go straight to Mathura; the holy procession in Mathura is colourful and lovely. Small boys and girls are dressed in get up of lord Krishna and Radha and you can see them spraying colours on each other while standing on the road. This procession starts from Vishram Ghat at 3:00 p.m. and ends at Holi gate during the sunset.

Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is done in the evening at the holi gate to witness people coming from distant places. You can also enjoy the cultural programs there.

Day 7

07 March 2023 Holi in Dwarkadhish temple, Mathura.

This is the actual Holi day. On this day you must head to Dwarkadhish temple in Mathura where the festival starts at 10:00 a.m. this is good to visit early to experience all the events going there and also get a glass of bhang thandai in every shop there.

The gates open at 10:00 a.m. and people come before that so that it doesn't miss a single second of the event; the crowd at the banke Bihari temple is used to people dancing Sing beat dhola and enjoy.

Day 8

08 March 2023 – Huranga

Dauji temple is the next destination to head towards after Holi. 30 km away from Mathura is Baldeo. You can have your breakfast at 10:00 a.m. and get ready to visit the place where the festival starts at 12:30 but it is suggested to visit a quite early you have to see Lath mar Holi in Barsana and nandgaon earlier. But in the temple the men are not only beaten with sticks but also stripped. You can see the women throwing colour on men and beating them with the old drink bhang and dancing around the temple. It is a very interesting and joyful view.

Travel tips :-

  • Make Mathura as base and book your accommodation. You have good options to stay here. Vrindavan do not have many options. Book well in advance as Holi in vrindavan and Mathura has become very popular ins last few years.
  • A dedicated vehicle/taxi is necessary as the festivities are spread out around Mathura. Though the distances are not long, the public transport is very poor.
  • Go to the event places early so that you get vantage point to watch the festivities.
  • Join the villagers and locals in festivities. They will always welcome you.
  • Don’t act funny and misbehave with locals. Especially with women. Then you will get real “lath Mar” holi experience!!
  • Carry a good bag-pack and keep your valuables in a plastic cover inside it so that it won’t get wet.
  • You will find people playing holi everywhere especially in the narrow lanes around the temple. Join them and have fun.
  • When you are going in the morning, make sure you finish your breakfast and then go.
